I Giullari di Piazza artists-in-residence at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City, was founded in 1980 by Artistic director, singer, author and award- winning percussionist, Alessandra Belloni. Its mission is to educate audiences, both in theatres and schools, In the rich folklore of Southern Italy through concerts, theatrical productions and workshops, all of which are based on the extensive academic and field research conducted by Alessandra Belloni. The company specializes in the improvisational style of Commedia dell’ Arte theatre and authentic southern Italian folk music and dance, combined with the ancient myths and legends of Italian folklore. Through the creation of new works based on these old traditions, especially the authentic tarantella dance, our goal is to encourage Italian-American awareness, interest and pride in this rich ethnic heritage which has largely been lost due to integration and assimilation into mainstream American culture.
